NORWICH AREA TRANSPORT STRATEGY IMPLEMENTATION:
MAKING ROOM – ST STEPHEN’S STREET AREA PROJECT
The Norwich Society supports this strategy and its objectives of improving the
environment for retail and commercial development, of improving the quality and
reliability of public transport and of further developing the ring-and-loop traffic
model for the city centre.
Our three reservations are as follows:
1) With the exclusion of cars from St Stephen’s Street and the subsequent greater
efficiency of the buses, we cannot see why buses need to use Chapelfield North at all.
The amount of time potentially saved on each journey is so small as to be negligible
compared with the impact on Chapelfield North’s street environment and on its
2) We are still concerned about the pavement on the north side Chapelfield North
which we feel should be improved, made fully suitable for use by the disabled (e.g.
for wheelchairs) and possibly slightly widened. The number of access roads breaking
up the pavement may make it very difficult for electric powered disability vehicles
unless there is extra width.
3) We regret that there is insufficient funding to convert St Giles Street into a twoway
street and urge a reconsideration of this omission and a re-examination of the
Secretary to the Trustees
