Civic Voice

Conservation and Development Committee

1. To promote the interests of the built heritage with particular emphasis on listed buildings, scheduled ancient monuments and other monuments. This includes individual buildings or groups of buildings and their setting such as Elm Hill and the City wall.

2. To consider specific architectural problems, such as the future of under-used or unused historic buildings, where the Society might put forward detailed ideas for discussion in advance of any formal proposals.

3. To initiate “design ideas” studies, exhibits or discussions in order to publicise selected conservation and planning topics: eg considering the effect of new buildings and their roof structures on the historic roofscape and City views.

4. To support initiatives which will enhance the appreciation of the city, such as the provision of new public sculpture and the creation of a list of significant local buildings (eg: pubs, schools, commercial and industrial buildings, streetscape items), valued by communities but are otherwise unprotected by the planning laws.

5. To defend other forms of heritage such as the civic portraits or the records of Colman’s and to find ways to make them accessible.

An essential attribute of the Committee is an ability to respond rapidly, normally through the Administrator, on behalf of the Society to conservation and development issues when they are first raised.
