The Norwich Society

Officers & Committees

The Executive Committee chaired by Alec Hartley is the principal body responsible for running the affairs of the Society.  The committee receives recommendations from its subsidiary committees and representatives, and establishes coherent views and strategies.

The Committee is not concerned simply with the conservation of the many fine historic buildings in the city. It also seeks to influence the city planners regarding current developments so that future generations can look back with pride at what the present generation has achieved.

Environment –Averil Brennan

The committee works to ensure that the City is maintained to the highest standards as regards to cleanliness and appearance. Particular attention is given to street furnishing and planting, signage, maintenance of open spaces, waste disposal, urban vandalism and litter, pollution by emissions, noise and bad lighting.
The committee undertakes annual audits of segments of the City and other occasional reports.

Planning Appraisal – Mary Ash

The aim of the Planning Appraisal Committee is to conserve and enhance the City’s historic heritage and to encourage good modern architecture, urban planning and open spaces.
The lists of planning applications to the City Council are circulated to members, who study those that they consider to be important.  The Committee meets once a month to discuss the members’ views which are forwarded to the Head of Planning to be included in the recommendations tabled at the meetings of the City Council’s Planning Committee.
When there are large developments to be considered the Society’s Planning Appraisal Committee members are usually invited by the developers to presentations at which views can be expressed.

Strategic Planning and Transport Committee –Derek Burke

The committee meets every third Tuesday in the month.

Taking a  long and proactive view, this Committee considers developments, plans, legislation and regulations, that affect planning and transportation within the Greater Norwich area, with particular reference to how they may affect quality of life, the historic character of the City and standards  of new development and design.

The Committee will seek to co-operate with other relevant bodies where possible, but will provide constructive criticism when necessary.
